Production and Use
The orchid pots are all high fired earthenware which makes them quite strong enough to serve as planters, yet still retain attractive colours.
The pots are made to be planted into directly, as putting a plastic pot inside defeats the object of the holes (and won't look so pretty).
The square, hexagonal and some of the natural pots on this site are large enough to fit an average size plastic pot. All the pots apart from the natural designs (described lower down the page), are glazed only on the outside. All the measurements given for the pots are the external size.
Each pot will have air holes in the side, rectangular or circular, depending on the design and shape of the pot. If finer earth is used, this may come out of the air holes, and can be stopped by putting mesh around the inside of the pot before planting.

The roots will eventually start growing out of the air holes as they search for the air and light.
The feet are taller than usual, to keep the bottom of the pot from sitting in excess water in the tray.
Moisture retaining pebbles can also be used in the tray to help maintain humidity around the orchid.
I make a range of 'natural' planters, which are all handmade, therefore each peice is unique. These are made from crank (stony) clay with streaks of iron oxide, the surface is then roughened to give it a natural woody appearance, these are glazed inside and out with a transparent gloss glaze
Each tray has, either a piece of felt, or cork circles on the base, so as to keep the ceramic from scratching any surface on which it is placed. All pieces are stamped on the base of the pot with my impressed mark.
.
Clean pots with a damp cloth, don't use any abbrasive substances, as this will stratch the glaze surface.
